Background of the Study
Environmental degradation and desertification pose significant threats to livelihoods in Damaturu Local Government Area (LGA), Yobe State. Tree planting campaigns, as part of broader environmental conservation efforts, are critical in mitigating these challenges by reducing deforestation, improving soil quality, and enhancing biodiversity. Development communication plays a pivotal role in these campaigns, promoting awareness, community participation, and sustainable practices (Musa & Ahmed, 2023; Yusuf et al., 2024). By leveraging various communication channels—such as community radio, public workshops, and social media—tree planting campaigns can engage diverse audiences and foster a sense of environmental responsibility (Bello & Adebayo, 2025). This study explores the role of development communication in promoting tree planting campaigns in Damaturu LGA, emphasizing its impact on community awareness and participation.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the pressing need for environmental conservation in Damaturu LGA, tree planting campaigns often face challenges such as low community awareness, cultural resistance, and limited participation (Okafor & Yusuf, 2024). Ineffective communication strategies exacerbate these issues, hindering the success of tree planting initiatives (Ahmed & Bello, 2025). This study investigates the role of development communication in addressing these challenges, focusing on strategies to enhance the effectiveness and impact of tree planting campaigns in Damaturu LGA.
